“Love takes many forms but we think dessert is one that’s universal.”
-Peter Jacob, The Cakabakery

Above all, we believe in love. Our business is founded on it; the love and passion for what we do and those around us is the foundation for everything we create. When we love, we do it with style, grace, and vision. When you ask us to create something to celebrate your love; the love of your life, your child, your family, your best friend or a special occasion – we put our very best into every bit of flour, eggs and sugar.

Wedgwood1

I do;

We have helped create surprises, special proposals and designed dreamy wedding cakes. We have had the pleasure of witnessing incredible intimacy first-hand in the bakery with one in-shop proposal (and have had our hand in a slew of others – seven to be exact!), and four weddings that have taken place right here in the shop.

IMG_6383 IMG_6387

The live proposal came in the form of decorated cupcakes hidden in our “you build up my heart” themed window display. The display included several tiny white figures with white construction gear: trucks, cranes and all, working together to build a brick-clad, heart shaped cake. The cupcakes bearing the letters spelling “will you marry me” were nestled into the display. The couple approached the window and the gentleman pointed at the display. She nodded and walked by. He guided her back to the window to take a closer look where, of course, she smiled, noted that she really loved the idea and walked toward the door. He finally said “Please look a little closer”, she did. She decoded the hidden message and cupped her hands to her mouth, tears welling up in her eyes. He knelt, she gasped… they hugged. She agreed.

Michelle Baker, assistant baker to Jason, was the very first bride weeks before the official public opening in 2012; no fairy tale could tailor a better blessing or christening for the bakery. The weddings took place in our quaint courtyard strewn with lights or under the beautiful natural lighting of the greenhouse portion of our shop. Peter and Jason have stood witness in two of the ceremonies.

Being able to share beauty, joy, love, and celebration with family and friends is the absolute foundation for The Cakabakery. We suspect this is a big reason why, when you walk through the doors, you can feel it; the magic. It’s a collective effort of the love of many, and our ability to foster that love by being a part of these special moments.

One of the best sounds in the bakery is the bell above the door. A little jingle that has a touch of whimsey; every time I hear it, I know I’m about to look up and see the familiar warmth in the eyes of a gaze set on our display. You know the look, when you can see a mouth watering, eyes glazing over, a little curious smile or, on the face of a child, an unbridled grin.

Often children are brought into the bakery for a treat, for so many reasons, but I believe it’s because it is truly even sweeter to see a child light up when their small hands gasp a treat, handed to them by someone they adore.

We get to see the joy of children dreaming a birthday cake with their parents, the kindness of a brother sending cupcakes to his sister who needs a little cheering up, the thoughtfulness of a granddaughter who wants to bring her grandmother her favorite kind of pie, or a husband coming in minutes before we close on his way home from work, to bring his wife a cookie just to make her smile.

Other times, the door jingles and the opposite generation walks in; a mother and daughter, seasoned in life, enjoying an afternoon together. Both taking a break from their families or their jobs to come together to catch up and to share the warmth of the bakery during our blustery winter. Or a son coming in each week for the same order, a box of cookies to bring to his parent’s home while visiting.

We want to celebrate the love of family this Valentine’s week. They are the people who know us best, the good and the bad, who have watched us grow and have given us guidance through life. They will become the people we have known the longest throughout our entire lives. Let your family know you cherish them with a sweet gesture. All of our baked goods are made from scratch with the freshest possible ingredients because we wouldn’t bake anything that’s not the very best!

It’s almost here! It’s that time of year when everything becomes decorated with little hearts, and every blend of white and red will pop out of window displays and doorways. Soon sweet little notes will float back and forth in classrooms and offices. People will put on those spring loaded headbands to make hearts dance above their heads.

Show your gratitude and love for the teachers, postal workers, snow plow drivers, hairdressers, day care providers, and anyone one else who touches your life, with a dessert from our bakery.

With $2 cookies, you could walk out the door with an armload to hand out; or for $2.50 show your love with a beautifully decorated cupcake. Of course if they’re an All Star, we can help you special order a cake, or walk away with one of our ready made cakes for $30! And our cookie dough, Love’s ice cream, and unique gifts would surely make someone feel very special.

In Michigan, we know what winter is all about. Each year we speculate, will we have the big blizzard? Will we be buried under fourteen inches of snow tomorrow? It’s the season we all secretly adore, giving us an excuse to stay in for safety’s sake, forcing us, completely against our will, to curl up with warm mugs of tea, cocoa, good books, and wool blankets. When you live where the snow falls softly, you can’t help but let Mother Winter win your heart over at least a few times throughout the season. The rich colors of spiced chocolate, warm fur, cozy knit sweaters, flickering fireside, calm and quiet white. The scents of cedar, spruce, pine and mulling spice.ww4ww6

When we take the beauty that winter offers us, and surround two people on their most important day with the ones who love them most dearly; there could be nothing warmer or more romantic. Candle light dancing, velvet gowns, dark hues, soft music and warm drinks. The cold invites both bride and groom to open their imagination to the magic in the frost, to a more fanciful world where they can ride away in a horse drawn sleigh.

Winter’s backdrop can suit any palette, from shimmering gold and luscious crimson, to playful blues and forest greens. Here at The Cakabakery, we feel the same way about our cakes, with a slightly different palate! The options are endless, from fruit tarts or traditional pies, to cakes with notes of clove, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. Holiday inspired cookies are full of creative potential. You can choose to warm up or cool off your treats; any way you slice it will be just as sweet. ww3

Take a look at that our good friend, Sam Vanderlist of Shutter Sam Photography created with a lot of local and gifted friends. The theme is, “Red’s Winter Wedding”. We’ll share her blog and resulting media very soon. For now, here’s your exclusive peek at the winter wonder.

WHAT? WHO? ME?

WHAT? WHO? ME?

Do bakers have birthdays? Of course they do! Did you know that Jason Kakabaker is having a birthday… this week? On January 10th Mr. Kakabaker will mark one more year of custom baking on his calendar. This is cause for a proper celebration!

We’ll be making his day special at Cakabakery and we’d like you to help us. Drop in this week and tell Jason what he has meant to you. Did he make your baby’s first b-day a SMASH? Did he make your wedding the sweetest day, ever? Did he squeeze you real tight one time and make your heart swoon (he does that a lot)? Stop in and tell him how you feel. Sing him a birthday song… write him a celebratory rhyme… whatever you like. He’ll smile for days!

That’ll make him, and the rest of us at team Cakabakery, real happy. And we all like happy!

Hope to see you soon!

The Cakabakery Team

What’s your favorite part of the holidays? Is it hanging the tinsel on the tree? Is it attending all the events and dressing like an elf for a month? Or perhaps its the shopping. No, not the shopping? You’re kidding? You must not know that we have your gifting covered.

At Cakabakery we have partnered with local artisans, crafters and the green-tumb-iest pals we know to create a Christmas Shop that we think you’ll love!

Here’s what we’ve got…

We’ve got greenery bundles to deck the halls, Wreaths in all sizes to adorn your walls… Cocoa Mug Kits to give them grin-fits, Cake-a-Long jars you can send up to mars… Towels to wrap with or give to a hostess, Cards made of wood that we think are the mostest… (I should stop, but I can’t help it) Cute baby onsies to cover their bunsies and hand hammered platters to serve them what matters… “What matters”, you ask with a tilt in your neck.
